Recreational League

FAQ
Are there tryouts for recreational players?

No. There are no tryouts for our recreational league. Everyone who registers is placed on a team. All teams are led by volunteer parent coaches.

How old does my child have to be to play?

Our recreational program currently serves players from U6 through 6th grade.

When is registration?

Registration is available online: Spring season registration typically opens in January and our Fall season registration typically opens in July.

What is the registration fee?

The fee is $50* per player which includes a t-shirt-style jersey.

*If you volunteer as a head coach, your child’s registration fee is waived (see more under the Coach tab).

What equipment is needed?
  • Shin guards (required for games and practices, must be worn under socks)

  • Cleats (strongly recommended)

  • A soccer ball for home and practice

    • Size 3: U6 & U8

    • Size 4: U10 and up

Are scholarships available?

Yes! Scholarships are available for families who qualify. Click the scholarship button to fill out our form.

Can I request a friend to be on our team?

Yes. During online registration, you’ll find fields to request a coach or teammate. While we do our best to honor requests, they are not guaranteed.

When are practices and games?
  • Games are typically held on Saturday mornings into early afternoons.

  • Practices are scheduled by your child’s coach.

During registration, you can include schedule conflicts in the special request box. We use that information to try and avoid conflicts, but teams cannot be changed once assigned.

How do age groups work?

Age groups follow US Soccer guidelines and are non-negotiable. Players may not “play up” or “play down” in our recreational program. The “U” stands for “under”, so a child cannot turn eight in the same calendar year and still play U8. Age brackets reset with the fall season. Refer to the Youth Soccer Age Group Matrix for more details.

Do you keep score?

No. We do not keep official scores in our recreational league. Our focus is on fun, learning, and skill development rather than competition. We do not award trophies or participation medals. If your child is ready for a more competitive environment, check out our Club/Competitive program.

When will I hear from my child’s coach?

You should hear from your coach within a week after the coaches’ meeting. Most coaches communicate through the GroupMe app, so we recommend downloading it as the season approaches. You should also join our announcement group so you don’t miss out on anything CJFC Rec League Wide Announcement
